No trip to Pohang is complete without visiting Jukdo Market, the largest traditional market on Korea’s east coast. With around 1,500 shops and one of the country’s busiest seafood markets, it’s where locals come for the freshest catch of the day—and where visitors can experience everyday life in Pohang.

If you’re wondering what to eat, start with mulhoe, Pohang’s signature dish. Unlike Japanese sashimi, mulhoe is served in an icy, spicy broth with fresh raw fish, vegetables, and plenty of refreshing flavor. It’s especially popular during the hot summer months and perfectly captures the city’s seaside identity.

Another must-try is hoe (Korean-style sliced raw fish). One of the best things about Jukdo Market is that you can choose live seafood directly from the market and have it prepared at a nearby restaurant within minutes. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.

If you happen to visit during winter, don’t miss gwamegi, a local specialty made by naturally drying herring or Pacific saury in the cold sea breeze. Its rich, slightly chewy texture may be unfamiliar at first, but it’s considered one of Pohang’s most iconic seasonal delicacies.

Pohang may not have the fame of Seoul or Busan, but that’s part of its charm. Here, you’ll find dramatic coastlines instead of crowded streets, seafood caught just hours earlier instead of tourist menus, and peaceful ocean views that make you want to stay a little longer.
